Reliable and courteous parking service for visitors to London Gatwick airport.

La Tagliata, Via Tagliata, Positano, Italy

BadOtter on Positano's best kept secret.

Ristorante ''Da Andrea'' Hotel Villa, Santa Maria di Castellabate, Italy

The following report is the reason why I rarely visit Italian restaurants in the UK, which I find overpriced, most stuck in a sixties timewarp(veal in marsala anyone?) and pale imitations of the establishments, like this, still in existence in many regions of Italy.

Il Padellacio, 2 Viale Manzoni 73-75-77 Roma, Italy

We arrived back in Rome very late, having been out in the country all day, and were about to despair of finding anywhere still open when L spotted this place, and we agreed to go there whatever it was like. In fact it wasn't bad, but they were so incredibly busy it was quite comical. We shared a seafood salad: the waiter slowed down slightly as he whizzed past the buffet, slung some of the salad on a plate and skidded by our table skillfully landing it between us without ever actually stopping.

Al Cavallino Bianco, Via E. Filiberto 23-25-27, 00185 Roma, Italy

Via E. Filiberto 23-25-27, 00185 Roma, Italy

This was recommended at the B&B where we stayed. Strange yellow satin napery, but comfortable and clean enough. L started with risotto marinara, I had ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach - both good. We shared a second course of turbot, which was very fresh and taken off the bone for us at our table, accompanied by spinach. The food quality was excellent, but the service was showy (many flourishes while de-boning the fish on a side table) but indifferent, and we were kept waiting quite a lot, although the restarant was not crowded.

Torre 5, Corsa Porta Nuova 9, Verona, Italy

Corsa Porta Nuova 9, Verona, Italy

Probably the most cynical place we went to in Verona, this Pizzeria clearly exists to exploit tourists. Bruschetta watery and unimaginative, steak slightly old and cheaper than other establishments, penne arrabiatta with little trace of anything other than a light coating of chilli oil and, yet again, no Italian Beer. Why are the Italians in this part of the country so ashamed of the beauties of Moretti and Peroni? Our waiter explained that the Italian Beer in these parts was the wine…….

La Bricula, near the Catelvecchio, Verona

Monument tired and walk weary found us down a tiny street near the museum in Verona. Our mission - get away from the tourist highways and the rough guide recommendations and find ourselves an honest to goodness Italian "trat". We found it here and cursed ourselves that we weren't able to go back. A welcome as cheery as you might expect, we were shoe-horned into a corner and immediately given two slices of "house special" bruschetta.

Bellavista, Visgnola Co, Via Nuova 2, 22021 Bellagio (Como), Italy

Its just down the hill - very beautiful food - "Sadichi Blue". We got there, courtesy of our taxi driver only to be told that it was closed. Across the road, across a river of rain, we ran into a pizza place. Pizza Bella Vista was pretty basic but at least cheery - the micro-waved pasta dull and ordinary (we heard the beep-beep of the microwave all night), my pizza large, crispy and piled with veg - a Rustica - was fine, functional rather than tasty.

Trattoria Primavera, Viale B. Croce, 69 66013 Chieti Scalo Abruzzo, Italy

Viale B. Croce, 69 66013 Chieti Scalo Abruzzo, Italy

Turn left out of Chieti Scalo Railway Station and Trattoria Primavera is about three minutes walk. It has the feel of an expensive restaurant, crisp tablecloths and sparkling glasses, but it isn't at all. L started with spaghetti and anchovies, I had pasta with sepia (squid) and aubergines, both were freshly cooked and delicious. We both chose Arosto Misto for our mains - a plate of 3 grilled fish, perfectly presented.

L'insalata Ricca, Largo dei Chiavari, 85/86 Roma, Italy

Largo dei Chiavari, 85/86 Roma, Italy

Our friend B had been in Rome the previous week and said she ate here all the time. They've got at least eight other branches, but this is the central one where B and we ate. The tables are outside, the waiters are friendly, quick and professional, and seem actually to enjoy their job in a way that only Italians ever seem to get quite right. They make you believe they love you - how do they do that to everyone? There's a comprehensive menu, but we went for the great long list of salads, with English translations.
