Launceston Place. 1A Launceston Place, London W8 5RL

It was Valentines weekend and I had decided to take Mrs La for a day out in London. As I wanted this to be as special as could possibly be, I had undertaken painstaking research into where the best possible venue to eat would be.

Le Fondouk, 55 Souk Hal Fassi, Kat Bennahïd, Medina, Marrakech, Morocco.

We had a special birthday dinner to celebrate, so from Condé Nast Traveller’s list of recommended restaurants, we chose le Fondouk. If you have been to Marrakech, you will know that the streets of the Medina are far too narrow for cars, so unless you are lucky enough to own a donkey, you walk. And no matter how grand your destination, if the house next door to it is being rebuilt, you have to climb over a six foot pile of rubble to get there.

Harvey's of Ramsgate, Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, Kent CT11 8LS

What a disappointment! A great location and a stylish venue overlooking the harbour. Service? What service? Surly and incompetent staff seem to be the speciality.

The OXO Tower Restaurant - London

The OXO Tower has an interesting history, first constructed as a power station, then converted by the manufacturers of OXO into a cold store and finally, substantially refurbished for its current mixed use.

Ayame, 237 Glenferrie Rd, Malvern, Melbourne VIC 3144

The worldwide economic downturn looks to be a terrible thing for many, and if it has affected you, you have my sympathy. However, it is not all bad news, because all those pretentious, overpriced restaurants, who rely on a fancy address, snobbery and customers' fear of embarrassment to - frankly - rob them, will go to the wall.

From the street, it looks as if Mamounia is just an elegant, dimly lit bar, and there is little indication of the restaurant downstairs. It was raining, so we had coats and umbrellas, and as the person showing us down to our table did not take our costs, we assumed there would be somewhere to hang them downstairs. But no – we had to sling them over the backs of our chairs. The restaurant is also dimly lit, so the menu’s small writing on coloured paper was a challenge as I’d forgotten my specs. The menu is divided into Lebanese, Moroccan and Fusion and there’s a wide choice. We started with a shared plate of mixed Lebanese meze, all fine and freshly cooked, but to be honest, no better than one would get in any Green Lanes Turkish restaurant, or – say - Gallipoli in Upper Street. And of course, twice the price. But this is Mayfair, with crisp napery, swift service and a floorshow, so it’s certainly value for money.

In the dark days before Britain discovered food, you would head into the countryside for a meal with all the enthusiasm of a Roman centurion venturing into Boudicca’s local for an afterwork pint. Dining options seemed limited to a clutch of dowdy restaurants and woodbine-scented pubs, all seemingly locked in an eternal battle to see who could get the most breadcrumbs onto the menu. It was not a good time to be a scampi.
