London

Morgan M Restaurant, 489 Liverpool Road, Islington London N7 8NS

We booked for lunch on a cold Thursday in February, the welcome was warm and attentive, but formal. After we had ordered, along came the amuse-gueule: tiny, delicious eggy things. Our starters both came on oblong plates: Pan-fried Foie Gras from 'Les Landes' on toasted Brioche, with Fig Salad and Red Wine Syrup for me, Carpaccio of Gently Smoked Diver-caught Scallops, with Black Truffle Foam and Dressing for him.

'More' Restaurant 104 Tooley Street, London Bridge, London SE1 2TH

I booked 'More' following reading an article about the owner, founder of the Real Greek in the FT. I booked for a party of 8 and wasn't quite sure what to expect.

Jin Korean Restaurant, 16 Bateman Street London W1D 3AH

"What kind of food would you like - pick anything", I said. "Vietnamese", she said. Q has not been well and not travelled anywhere for months so today we got on a train to London, hoping that when she got off the other end that she wouldn't feel too wobbly.

The OXO Tower Restaurant - London

The OXO Tower has an interesting history, first constructed as a power station, then converted by the manufacturers of OXO into a cold store and finally, substantially refurbished for its current mixed use.

Foxtrot Oscar, 79 Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, London SW3 4HN

Today we went to Foxtrot Oscar. It's Gordon Ramsay's new restaurant. It was absolutely marvellous. It cost £112.48 including all wine and service. Very reasonable for high quality London food. And it's in the heart of Chelsea. We had a bit of a to-do about it as well.

Maze, 10 - 13 Grosvenor Square, London W1K 6JP

Voted 2005’s Best New Restaurant by Time Out, the delightful tasting menu works with the picking of 4-6 dishes, all slightly smaller than the three-course A La Carte or Set Menu, with the kitchen selecting the appropriate order of your choices.

The Painted Heron, 112 Cheyne Walk Chelsea London SW10 0DJ

The English Dictionary’s definition of Heron: noun – "Any of numerous long-legged, long-necked, usually long-billed birds of the family Ardeidae, including the true herons, egrets, night herons, and bittons."

Han Kang, 16 Hanway Street, London, W1T 1UE

The redoubtable Mrs Kim has held sway at the magnificent Han Kang for years, and, although competition in the form of Koba and Myung Ga have their admirers, Korean food can hardly get tastier than this in London.

Gem(Kurdish/Turkish Restaurant) 265 Upper Street Islington London N1 2UQ

Looking for a quickish meal before the theatre at The Almeida I dug out this little jewel from the various review sites. What a find. It lived up to all the expectations.

Pacific Oriental, 52 Threadneedle Street, London, EC2R 6HP

There are years to open sparkly restaurants in the City of London and credit-crunched 2008 isn't one of them. Pacific Oriental is a pretty ambitious undertaking, though. The restaurant is set in the cavernous former HQ of NatWest and combines the glamour of the ’20s Orient with the marbled grandeur of the Square Mile.
