The Brilliant has been a Southall fixture for over 30 years, and I have been coming here regularly for fifteen of these. It aims to do traditional, family style Punjabi cooking in a restaurant setting. Recently the influence of the owner's daughter has added a number of "healthy options", where there is less use made of ghee.
The strengths are in the main course curries and in several of the starters. For example Methi chicken has tender chicken in a rich, spicy sauce with fenugreek. On the starters, aloo tikki is a dish you only seem to see n Southall: chickpeas, tamarind, yogurt and coriander, which work well as a combination. The chicken starter dishes are excellent e.g. methi chicken (cumin) or malai chicken tikka, or butter chicken if you don't mind the calories. The naans are OK but no more that than, but the romali roti is excellent. Vegetable dishes could do with a being cooked a fraction less to retain more texture, though aloo chollay (mainly chickpeas with a few pieces of potato) works well. They actually make the desserts here, including excellent kulfi and halwa. It is very much a family atmosphere, with groups of ten or more commonplace.
What a pleasure to have a decent ''modern British'' place around the corner so to speak. Pinner High St is one of those little Metroland gems off the main road and close to the Underground Met. Line. Friends is housed in a genuine 16th Century Tudor cottage, and has been refurbed inside with black leather chairs and crisp white tablecloths and fresh flowers and a log fire. They also have an upmarket deli next door. The owner oversees the unhurried service and kitchens. The waiters are young but not the usual gormless spotty oiks you often encounter. They offer all sorts of a la carte, bistro, lunch, dinner and prix fixe menus with a vegetarian option on every one. We went for a Sunday lunch and it was welcoming, with a pleasant family atmosphere. Nice bread selections and for starters we both opted for the Smoked Salmon Parfait. Other choices were Roast Parsnip Soup, Game Terrine, Monkfish and Crab pate. Mains for both of us were traditional Roast Beef Sirloin cooked pinkish but nice and crusty outside, proper crunchy roast spuds and a nice selection of al dente veg. Options included Sea Bream fillet and Jugged Hare. And to finish Chocolate panna Cotta with Raspberries. Also on that days menu were Caramel Choux buns, Orange bread and Butter Pudding and Lemon Tarte. We had a nice lightish red wine(can't remember which) espressos and petit fours. The basic Menu for three courses is an excellent value £21.50. Treat yourself to a Sunday in Pinner. Farmers Market in the morning, a pint in the (Tudor) Queens Head and lunch in Friends. A further advantage was that we walked home, and collapsed for the rest of the day. Approved fully. Al Imentada
Where do i start? This is my favourite restaurant! When you first look at Red Peppers it looks like any other small restaurant but when you get inside it opens out into a old fashioned rustique style restaurant! It reminds me of the small bistros in Italy only with more class! Service is normally first class although on one occasion we were kept waiting for 20 minutes but it was extremely busy, and is the only fault i have ever experienced there.
The Business Card shows 5 Edwinns - Shepperton, Englefield Green, Bramley Nr Guildford, Fareham & Harefield. The reverse of the card advertises 'Bluebeckers' eating houses. The Harefield restaurant occupies an imposing hillside site overlooking a surprisingly rural scene of reservoir and Grand Union Canal at Black Jack's lock. It is set in imposing grounds down a country lane and could be in deepest countryside if it wasn't a couple of miles from Rickmansworth & Watford.
